The Dangers of Raw Diets: A Christian Perspective on Health and Faith

Many Christians today choose to follow diets that mimic the eating habits of people from thousands of years ago. Some of these diets promote eating raw meat and drinking raw milk, claiming these are healthier or more natural options. While everyone has the freedom to make their own choices, it is important to understand the risks involved and how these choices relate to Christian faith and the reality of living in a fallen world.

Why Raw Diets Can Be Risky

Eating raw animal products carries significant health risks. Raw meat can harbor harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, which cause serious illnesses. Cooking meat properly kills these bacteria, making it safe to eat. Similarly, raw milk contains pathogens that pasteurization removes, protecting people from diseases like tuberculosis and brucellosis.

These food safety processes were developed because humans cannot safely consume raw animal products. Our digestive systems are not designed to handle the bacteria and parasites found in uncooked meat or unpasteurized milk. Choosing raw diets ignores these biological facts and can lead to food poisoning, infections, and long-term health problems.

The Connection Between Diet and Christian Faith

Some Christians believe that eating raw foods brings them closer to God or aligns with biblical teachings. However, the Bible does not command believers to eat raw meat or drink raw milk. Instead, it acknowledges the fallen state of the world, where sin introduced sickness and death (Romans 5:12).

Jesus’ death and resurrection gave believers authority to overcome evil, but this does not mean ignoring practical wisdom or putting God to the test by deliberately exposing oneself to harm. The Bible warns against testing God (Deuteronomy 6:16). Taking unnecessary health risks contradicts the responsibility Christians have to care for their bodies, which are described as temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Living Wisely in a Fallen World

The world remains full of dangers, including poisonous substances and harmful microbes. Christians are called to exercise dominion over the earth by actively protecting themselves and others from harm. This includes using knowledge and tools like cooking and pasteurization to ensure food safety.

In emergencies, believers can pray for protection and declare God’s power over sickness and danger. Yet, relying on faith does not mean ignoring common sense or medical advice. Faith and wisdom should work together to promote health and well-being.

Practical Steps for Christians Concerned About Health

  • Choose cooked meat and pasteurized milk to reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses.

  • Educate yourself about food safety and understand why these processes are necessary.

  • Balance faith with practical care by trusting God while using the tools He has provided.

  • Avoid extreme diets that lack scientific support and could harm your health.

  • Encourage community awareness about safe eating practices within your church or group.

Faith and Health Can Coexist

Being a Christian does not require rejecting modern knowledge about health and nutrition. Instead, faith calls for stewardship of the body and wise living. Raw diets that ignore food safety put believers at unnecessary risk and do not bring them closer to God.

Remember that original sin introduced sickness and death into the world, and while Jesus’ resurrection offers victory, it does not remove all dangers immediately. Christians must live responsibly, using both faith and reason to protect their health.

Choosing safe, cooked foods respects the gift of life God has given and honors the body as a temple. It also reflects an understanding of the fallen world and the ongoing spiritual battle believers face.
