Understanding What It Means to Truly Possess in Christ
What does it really mean to have something in Christ? Many Christians struggle with this question, especially when blessings seem delayed or absent in their lives. The truth is, possessing something in Christ goes beyond physical evidence or waiting for circumstances to change. It is about knowing and claiming what has already been secured for us in the spiritual realm because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
The Foundation of Our Possession in Christ
When Adam and Eve disobeyed God by listening to the devil, they lost authority over the earth and the blessings that came with it. Romans 6:23 explains that the wages of sin is death, meaning that sin separated humanity from the full blessings God intended. By obeying the devil, they handed over their authority and made him their master (Romans 5:12).
Jesus’ death and resurrection changed everything. He shed His blood to reconcile all creation back to God (2 Corinthians 5:18, Colossians 1:18-21). This reconciliation restored the possibility for believers to regain what was lost: health, healing, provision, protection, and salvation. These blessings are ours because of what Jesus accomplished, not because of what we do.
Possessing in the Spirit Before the Physical
One of the biggest misunderstandings is the need to wait for blessings to appear before believing we have them. Romans 4:17 teaches that God calls things that do not exist as though they do. This means that when we pray in faith, we already have what we asked for, even if it has not yet manifested physically (Mark 11:24).
Our requests belong to us in the spirit. The riches of Heaven have already secured them (Philippians 4:19). This spiritual possession is the foundation for what will eventually show up in our lives. Holding on to faith in what Heaven is doing is essential for the physical manifestation to occur (1 John 5:4).
Holding on to the Truth Despite Circumstances
The enemy will try to convince us that we do not have what God promised. Circumstances may suggest otherwise. Yet, the Bible encourages believers to hold on to the truth no matter what:
Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 10:23 urges us to hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering.
2 Corinthians 4:18 teaches us to focus on what is unseen and eternal, not what is seen and temporary.
This means that even when it looks like giving up would be easier, we must cling to the truth of what we possess in Christ.
Practical Steps to Know What You Possess
Understanding possession in Christ is one thing, but living it out requires action. Here are some practical ways to walk in the reality of what you have:
Study Scripture regularly to remind yourself of the promises God has made.
Pray with faith, believing that your requests are already secured in Heaven.
Declare your possession out loud. Speaking the truth strengthens your faith.
Reject doubt and negative thoughts by replacing them with God’s Word.
Surround yourself with a community that encourages you to hold on to your faith.
For example, if you are believing for healing, do not wait for symptoms to disappear before claiming it. Speak healing scriptures daily, pray in faith, and refuse to accept defeat. Your healing is already yours in the spirit.
What We Truly Own Is in Heaven
The Bible teaches that what we truly own is stored in Heaven and will eventually come down to earth. This means our focus should not be on temporary, earthly evidence but on the eternal reality secured by Christ. Our faith connects us to these heavenly resources, and our persistence in faith brings them into our lives.
This understanding changes how we approach prayer, challenges, and blessings. It frees us from relying solely on what we see and encourages us to trust in what God has already provided.
